PhishRepellent™ FAQ

Q. Isn't phishing just a consumer problem?
A. No. Increasingly, phishing is becoming a major concern for both consumers and enterprises. As noted by industry experts such as IDC and The Radicati Group, Phishing attacks will become more sophisticated and more threatening to both consumers and enterprises.

Q. What is at risk with phishing attacks?
A. Most people commonly believe that identity theft is all that is at risk. As serious as identity theft is, there are numerous other threats as well. Corporate identity, competitive intelligence information, and so much more is at risk. In addition, the distribution of malacious code is becoming a significant part of phishing attacks.

Q. Why isn't a good anti-spam filter good enough to block phishing messages?
A. Spam messages have very different characteristics than phishing messages. Most spam filters are designed to recognize the characteristics of spam messages. Phishing messages look legitimate; they appear to be legitimate messages from your bank, stock broker, or other source. As a result, spam filters don't recognize phishing messages as being anything other than legitimate email.

Q. So how is PhishRepellent able to detect phishing messages?
A. PhishRepellent, utilizing components of the STAR Engine and Bullet Signatures, has been designed specifically for detecting and eliminating phishing messages. As a result, PhishRepellent is looking at the message only to determine if it is a phishing message. If it is a phishing message it is tagged appropriately. If it is not, Mail-Filters STAR Engine and Bullet Signatures then analyze the message to determine if it is spam or legitimate. The result is an industry best catch-rate of over 95% of all spam/phishing messages with no false-positives (less than 1 in 1,000,000).

Q. Does PhishRepellent create latency?
A. No. In fact, the entire Mail-Filters anti-spam/phishing technology (including PhishRepellent) is over 30 times faster than the competition; filtering over 5,000 messages per second.

Q. Is PhishRepellent licensed as part of the STAR Engine (anti-spam technology)?
A. Yes. PhishRepellent is integrated into the STAR Engine and utilizes Bullet Signatures for both spam and phishing detection. When you license the STAR Engine from Mail-Filters and incorporate into your product your customers obtain the benefit of true anti-spam and anti-phishing filtering.

Q. What makes Mail-Filters' technology so powerful and preferred in the industry?
A. Everyday Mail-Filters is filtering messages for tens of millions of email boxes in over 100 countries, in over 30 languages. This provides Mail-Filtes with the unique ability to see phishing attacks on a global basis. As a result, Mail-Filters' technology is able to identify phishing messages, in more languages, than any other vendor. Likewise, Mail-Filters is also able to learn the location of phishing web-sites immediately, allowing for the most comprehensive database of known phishing web-sites in the industry. Other anti-spam vendors are unable to provide this same level of knowledge or protection because of the methods used by their technologies.
