Simply put, Mail-Filters’ core anti-spam technology creates a network environment virtually immune to spammer tricks. The technology excels at identifying the toughest kind of spam messages: embedded content spam, HTML spam, and foreign language spam – without generating false positives. To deliver this capability Mail-Filters combines several anti-spam weapons built from the ground-up to combat spammer tricks and techniques: Bullet Signatures Handcrafted by human editors Bullet Signatures are based on a combination of message attributes unique to a particular spammer (to eliminate false positives), and repeatable from one spam message to the next. Mail-Filters’ Bullet Database is constantly updated to ensure effectiveness and accuracy. STAREngine The StarEngine (Spammer Tricks Analysis and Response) is adept at spotting spammer tricks, the STAR Engine identifies suspicious misspellings and other unique spam-identifying characteristics. Tuned to look for very specific tricks, it ignores general factors that can generate false positives. RETIRE System for Image Based Spam Image based spam has become the weak spot of most spam filters. Spammers are able to deliver a unique image to each recipient simply by changing a single pixel with an image. RETIRE System for Email-Encapsulated Malware Spammers and hackers are using email more and more to distribute malware. In fact, email is often the place where virus are first distributed. While having a solid anti-virus defense system is critical the virus engine is only as good as the current signatures. Unfortunately there is a lag time between a new malware distribution outbreak and when AV vendors define, develop, and distribute a signature to combat the malware. Fortunately, Mail-Filters has introduced the RETIRE System that can detect malware being distributed long before AV vendors can have a solution in place. PhishRepellent Phishing attacks, those emails that appear to be from legitimate sources such as your bank or online site where you have an account and request that you supply your username, password, and other sensitive information, have become a major problem of security for end-users. Mail-Filters was the first and still the only company that has designed a technology to specifically detect and control phishing messages; other anti-spam vendors claim to have anti-phishing technology but really offer nothing more than their anti-spam filter and hope that it will detect phishing messages. IP Reputation System Most IP reputation lists are extremely flawed and cause significant false-positive rates because they quickly become out-dated and have very low quality control measures in place (even allowing anyone on the internet to add an IP address without proper training or knowledge). For this reason, Mail-Filters designed its own IP Reputation System that is managed exclusively by Mail-Filters' team of professional spam experts. Working 24/7, Mail-Filters team uses a variety of tools to confirm and validate IP addresses before they are included in the system and maintains a round-the-clock monitoring of the system to ensure accuracy. Community Based Submisson Network Mail-Filters has always been recognized as one of the founders of the concept of community based spam submission. However, unlike other technologies that use the community-based approach (some even exclusively), Mail-Filters utilizes its team of professional spam experts and tools to oversee all submissions before a signature is developed. This allows Mail-Filters to effectively weed-out valid email so as not to cause false-positives like other community-based solutions. What’s wrong with using Heuristic or Bayesian Filters? Heuristic, computational linguistic, and Bayesian filters have a lot of intellectual appeal. In addition to the intellectual appeal, these types of filters do not require the continuous effort to find spam and update the filters. Most Mail-Filter competitors prefer to implement this methodology. In practice, as any test will show, these filters produce too many false positives (identifying good messages as spam) and don’t catch much of the real Spam that is sent.
